Internet retailer Amazon.com is renovating its leased Alta Lakes Commerce Center delivery station in North Jacksonville.

The city issued a permit March 19 for the almost $1.72 million project for alterations to the 60,947-square-foot facility at 11084 Cabot Commerce Circle, Unit 200. The station is near Alta Drive and Interstate 295.

Kroll Konstruction LLC of Longwood is the contractor.

The project scope includes minor alterations to the existing package-delivery facility including the offices, along with loading dock equipment upgrades, new signage and wayfinding, and other improvements.

Packages arrive at the delivery station from Amazon’s fulfillment centers, are sorted, then loaded into vans and cars for delivery around the city.

The station opened in 2017.

Upon opening, the station manager said it had more than 250 full- and part-time workers, with more for seasonal deliveries.

Plans show the project is the Amazon delivery station in Alta Lakes Commerce Center at 11084 Cabot Commerce Circle, Unit 200.

The manager said then that its recent focus was its Delivery Service Partners program for regional and local companies that use the station to deliver packages for Amazon.

Another group using the delivery station were independent contractors in the Amazon Flex Program.

In 2020, Amazon remodeled the delivery center at a job cost of $865,815.

Amazon has three fulfillment centers in Jacksonville, all in the million-square-foot or larger range.

One is in Northwest Jacksonville near Jacksonville International Airport; one is in North Jacksonville in Imeson Park; and a third is in AllianceFlorida at Cecil Commerce Center in Westside.

Marking its 12th Jacksonville center, the city issued a permit March 14 for Amazon to build-out 260,970 square feet of space at 1700 Imeson Road in the Commonwealth Logistics Center at southwest Imeson Road and Commonwealth Avenue, near Interstates 10 and 295, which both connect to I-95.

The project is described as a warehouse package-type facility including package sorting and delivery.

Amazon’s first 11 facilities comprise the three fulfillment centers and other delivery and sortation operations.

The Seattle-based online retailer opened its first two fulfillment centers in September 2017 in Northwest Jacksonville and October 2017 in AllianceFlorida at Cecil Commerce Center, with the help of $26.7 million in city and state incentives for creating 2,700 jobs.

Since then, it opened its third fulfillment center, two sortation centers, a heavy bulk freight center and several delivery stations.

None of those subsequent facilities received incentives.

In fall 2021, Amazon opened the third fulfillment center, a Softlines facility, in Imeson Park at northeast North Main Street and Zoo Parkway.

The Alta Lakes Commerce Center delivery station is about 9 miles southeast of the airport-area fulfillment center and about 9 miles northeast of the Imeson Park center.
