Spencer’s, the novelties shop that says it provides “everything you didn’t know you needed,” posts that it is coming soon to St. Johns Town Center.
Spencer’s says it will open at 4611 River City Drive, Suite 140. A pending city sign permit shows it at that street address but at Suite 113.
Both addresses coincide with the spaces between Target and Ashley furniture, but it’s unclear which space Spencer’s will lease.
One site plan indicates it could be the Sally Beauty Supply and adjacent space. Sally Beauty Supply referred questions to its corporate office, which did not immediately respond to an email for comment.
Southeastern Lighting Solutions is the contractor for the signage.
Landlord Simon Property Group could not be reached for comment.
Spencer’s has two area stores – in The Avenues mall in Jacksonville and in the Orange Park Mall.
The stores.spencersonline.com site lists the stores and corporate information. It also is posting job openings for the Town Center store.
It says its mantra is “Life’s a party – and we’re makin’ it fun,”
Its website says it sells jewelry, T-shirts and adult novelties along with apparel, accessories, décor, lighting and more.
Generations of shoppers have prowled the aisles, where it’s generally accepted that the farther back a customer explores, the more unusual the merch.
“Spencer’s has been your mall mainstay for 75 years, and now we’re expanding our presence to outlets and beyond,” says the site.
“It’s our mission to make your trip to Spencer’s fun and unforgettable. We are deeply committed to our guests’ individuality – all are welcome here,” it says.
“We see your appetite for the outrageous, the rebellious, and the exciting, and we’re dedicated to bringing you products that represent your unique lifestyle and offer an escape from the mundane.”
Graphic T-shirts range from licensed favorites to horror, music and band, funny and more.
Body jewelry – real and fake – is sold, as are the Spencer’s “sex and wellness selections.”
“Go ahead and explore the whole store – you know you want to,” the site says.
Room and décor, including “groovy lava lamps” and incense; drinkware like beer bongs and beer pong; pop culture items; and seasonal merchandise also are on the shelves.
The privately held Spencer’s, based in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, operates more than 670 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
It began as a mail order company in 1947 and opened its first retail store in 1963 at New Jersey’s Cherry Hill Mall.
It says it began operating under new management in 2003.
Parent company Spencer Spirit Holdings also owns Spirit Halloween.
