OfficeMax in the River City Marketplace shopping center in North Jacksonville is closing.

On Jan. 26, items were marked down up to 40% off at the store at 13275 City Square Drive. Furniture and fixtures also were available.

A worker at the store said it would be open for about two more months.

There are three OfficeMax and three Office Depot stores in Jacksonville.

In 2013, the Daily Record reported there were 13 Office Depot and OfficeMax stores in Duval County. The office supply chains merged that year.

In September, Boca Raton-based ODP Corp., the owner of Office Depot and OfficeMax, reported sales for the third quarter of $1.8 billion, down 11% from the prior year.

It said the decrease was because of lower sales and 53 fewer retail locations compared with the previous year. It said it had 885 stores at the end of the third quarter.

Kimco Realty Corp. owns the River City Marketplace through Ramco Jacksonville LLC. It says on its website the store is 20,060 square feet.

Big Lots closing

Bankrupt retailer Big Lots Inc. also continues to close stores.

Big Lots said in December it plans to sell its stores, distribution centers and intellectual property to Boston-based asset liquidation firm Gordon Brothers Retail Partners LLC, which will then transfer some assets to Hendersonville, North Carolina-based Variety Wholesalers Inc.

Big Lots said Variety Wholesalers intends to acquire between 200 and 400 Big Lots stores, which it plans to operate under the Big Lots brand, and up to two distribution centers.

Those surviving stores don’t appear to be in Jacksonville.

A going-out-of-business sale is underway at the Big Lots store at 9119 Merrill Road, No. 50, in the Merrill Crossing shopping Center.

Gordon Bros. also is offering to sell the leases at its two other Jacksonville stores.

They are at 9625 Crosshill Blvd. in Oakleaf Town Center and 9718 Old Saint Augustine Road in Beauclerc Village.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for expansion-minded retailers to grow their footprint by acquiring well-located stores with long-term, below-market rents,” said Michael Burden, co-head of North America Real Estate Services at Gordon Brothers said in a news release.

“These spaces offer a seamless path to enhance their presence and serve new communities, making it an ideal time to capitalize on prime retail real estate.”
