Dollar General appears to be converting a West Jacksonville store in West Side Plaza into its DG Market grocery format.
The city issued a permit Jan. 23 for Allen Industries of North Carolina Inc. to put up a sign for DG Market at 5846 Normandy Blvd., Unit 7, at a project cost of $4,850.
The sign for the Dollar General Market format would replace the existing Dollar General sign.
The site is at southeast Normandy Boulevard and Lane Avenue, south of Interstate 10.
Dollar General has not responded to an email for comment.
DollarGeneral.com says Dollar General Market and DG Market formats offer expanded produce, refrigerated and frozen foods, dairy products and more, in addition to fresh meats, along with the general merchandise that the company sells.
Dollar General does not indicate there are any other DG Markets in Northeast Florida. The closest is in Kingsland, Georgia, which is about 35 miles north of Jacksonville.
Dollar General has more than 60 locations in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties.
As of Nov. 1, 2024, there were more than 20,500 Dollar General stores in 48 states and Mexico, with the greatest concentration of stores in the Southern, Southwestern, Midwestern and Eastern United States.
Dollar General, founded in 1939, is based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, near Nashville.
The company markets itself as America’s general store offering everyday essentials at affordable prices. Merchandise includes food, snacks, health and beauty aids, cleaning supplies, basic apparel, housewares, seasonal items, paper products and more from name brands and its private brands.
“We offer our customers these national brand and private brand products at everyday low prices (typically $10 or less) in our convenient small-box locations,” the company said in its quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
“We also remain focused on capturing growth opportunities,” it says.
It says about 75% percent of the U.S. population lives within 5 miles of a Dollar General store.
Dollar General reported financial results Dec. 5 for the third quarter that ended Nov. 1, 2024.
Dollar General said it opened 207 new stores, remodeled 434 stores, and relocated 27 stores during the third quarter.
During all of fiscal 2024, it plans to open about 730 new stores (including pOpshelf stores and stores in Mexico), remodel about 1,620 stores, and relocate about 85 stores. In fiscal 2025, it plans to open about 575 new stores (as well as up to 15 stores in Mexico), fully remodel about 2,000 stores, with an additional 2,250 stores partially remodeled, and relocate about 45 stores, for a total of 4,885 real estate projects.
Dollar General’s pOpshelf retail concept focuses on categories such as seasonal and home décor, health and beauty, home cleaning supplies, and party and entertainment goods.
“In light of the softer discretionary sales environment, we have converted certain pOpshelf stores to Dollar General stores, and do not believe opening new stores in fiscal 2025 is the best use of capital,” the SEC filing says.
“We continue to evaluate the right next steps for the pOpshelf banner. At the end of the third quarter of 2024, we operated 231 standalone pOpshelf stores.”
Dollar General says it expects store format innovation “to allow us to capture additional growth opportunities as we continue to utilize the most productive of our various Dollar General store formats based on the specific market opportunity.”
In 2025 it expects the significant majority of the stores to be in one of its 8,500-square-foot formats, which “allows for expanded high-capacity-cooler counts, an extended queue line, and a broader product assortment, including an enhanced non-consumable offering, a larger health and beauty section, and produce in select stores.”
Dollar General reported that third-quarter sales rose over the year by 5% to $10.18 billion, primarily because of new stores. Sales rose $1.3% in same-store sales.
