Happy New Year, Jacksonville legal community. You know what that means — it’s resolution season.
If you’re like me, you’ve probably already decided against the usual suspects like eating fewer cookies or actually going to the gym. Let’s face it, January is hard enough without the added pressure of pretending kale is enjoyable.
So instead of those classic (and doomed) resolutions, let’s focus on something that can genuinely make your professional and personal life better: your involvement with the Jacksonville Bar Association.
I know what you’re thinking: “Craig, I’m already swamped.” Hear me out. These resolutions aren’t about adding stress, they’re about making your life as a lawyer more rewarding, connected and maybe even a little fun.
Consider there resolutions:
Join the Jacksonville Bar Association
If you’re not already a member of the JBA, let me ask you this: Why not? The JBA is more than just an organization. It’s a professional community where you can learn, connect and grow.
Membership gives you access to high-quality CLE programs, networking opportunities and events where you can meet colleagues who truly understand the unique challenges of the legal profession.
Being a member also gives you a great reason to step away from your desk once in a while.
Don’t just join – show up
For those of you who are members but haven’t been to an event since the “Friends” finale, let’s make 2025 the year you re-engage.
We host a variety of events designed to meet your needs, whether it’s staying sharp with CLEs, connecting with peers at socials or just escaping your inbox for an hour or two.
You don’t have to go to everything — this isn’t a class attendance policy.
But showing up now and then could surprise you with new ideas, valuable connections or even just a good laugh.
Take better care of yourself
I’m not a lawyer, but I’ve worked with enough of you long enough to know this: Attorneys are amazing at solving other people’s problems but just as terrible at prioritizing their own well-being.
Make it a point to take care of yourself. Schedule time for a real lunch away from your desk. Block out your evenings for family, friends or hobbies.
And when you need a break, take one. No client emergency is worth running yourself into the ground.
Remember, a healthy, happy lawyer is an effective lawyer. I can’t offer a magic formula for balance, but I can tell you that stepping away from the grind every now and then will do wonders for your mind and your mood.
Give back
One of the best things about our legal community is its heart. You have the skills, knowledge and ability to make a real difference and 2025 is the perfect time to do it.
Find a way to give back, whether it’s volunteering for a local cause, taking on pro bono work or supporting community initiatives that speak to you.
You’ll not only help others, you’ll also remind yourself why you became a lawyer in the first place.
Celebrate the little wins
In the hustle of deadlines and casework, it’s easy to forget to celebrate progress, especially the small victories, but those small wins are what keep you going.
Maybe you finally tackled that case file you’ve been avoiding. Maybe you got through a tough week without pulling out your hair. Maybe you just showed up to an event and had a great conversation.
Whatever it is, take a moment to pat yourself on the back. You’ve earned it.
So there you have it — five resolutions that are practical, meaningful and more fun than dedicating yourself to cutting carbs.
Whether you’re joining the JBA as a new member, attending your first event in years or simply carving out time to care for yourself, the new year is full of opportunities.
Here’s to a 2025 filled with growth, connection and maybe even a little fun. I look forward to seeing you at a JBA event soon.
I promise there’s no kale involved.
