The city issued permits Feb. 24 for CSX Corp. to renovate the second floor of its Downtown headquarters at 500 Water St. at a combined project cost of almost $2.37 million.
LAY Construction of Jacksonville is the contractor.
The transportation company said in an email that CSX is “modernizing our second floor as part of an overall renovation project that includes updates to our main floor atrium, which began in 2023.”
“The work is part of a multi-year, phased plan to transform the iconic 500 Water Street building to meet the evolving needs of a 21st century workforce,” said spokeswoman Sheriee Bowman, senior manager of media relations.
“The project will result in more functional space for employees and guests, energy efficient HVAC system upgrades and technology improvements.”
CSX has been renovating the 15-story riverfront tower, which opened in 1960 for predecessor Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.
It also is adding new signage at the top - four signs – two each facing north and south along the Northbank of the St. Johns River.
It soon will be officially unveiled.
Each of the two sides will feature the CSX name and a railroad car.
Jacksonville-based Taylor Sign & Design Inc. is the contractor.
