The Jacksonville Lawyers Chapter of The Federalist Society will host “Perspectives on the Florida Supreme Court: A fireside chat with Justice Renatha Francis and former Justice Alan Lawson on Feb. 27 at The River Club Downtown.
The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. The program begins at 6:30 p.m.
Francis was appointed to Florida’s highest court by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2022.
Previously, DeSantis appointed her to the 15th Judicial Circuit Court in Palm Beach County, where she successfully retained her seat for a six-year term in 2022.
Francis also served on the circuit and county courts in the 11th Judicial Circuit of Miami-Dade from 2017-19 by appointment to each by then-Governor Rick Scott.
Francis is the first Jamaican-American to serve on the state Supreme Court.
Lawson was appointed to the state Supreme Court in 2016 by Scott and retired from the bench in 2022.
He was chief judge of the 5th District Court of Appeal, 2015-16; judge, 5th District Court of Appeal, 2006-16; judge, 9th Judicial Circuit, 2002-05; and assistant county attorney in Orange County, 1997-2001.
Lawson is a founding shareholder at Lawson Huck Gonzalez in Coral Gables.
Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served. The event is approved for 1.5 hours of CLE by The Florida Bar.
