A freestanding emergency room is in permit review for Ascension St. Vincent’s at northwest Kernan and Beach boulevards in the Sandalwood and Beach Haven area of Jacksonville.
Hoar Construction LLC is the contractor for the 13,559-square-foot project on almost 5 acres at an estimated project cost of $10.5 million.
Ascension St. Vincent’s said in an Oct. 3, 2024, news release that it is building a stand-alone emergency room at 12705 Beach that is scheduled to be completed in fall 2025. It said the facility will employ 40 and is expected to serve 16,000 patients annually.
Services will include a triage area, a critical care room, nine treatment spaces and advanced CT and X-ray technology.
St. Vincent’s bought the property in March 2020 for $4.5 million from West Kernan Loan Acquisition LLC, whose managing member is Tamaya Property Holdings LLC.
The permit application lists Medxcel as the property owner. Medxcel Facilities Management, based in Indianapolis, is a subsidiary of Ascension. Ascension is a faith-based nonprofit health care organization based in St. Louis.
Ascension’s network across 17 states and the District of Columbia encompasses about 128,000 associates, 33,000 affiliated providers, 118 wholly owned or consolidated hospitals and 34 senior living facilities.

“This new freestanding emergency room reinforces our commitment to our patients that they will have access to quality and compassionate care.”
The hospital projected that over the next five years the population in the Southside service area will grow 5.9%.
