The city issued a site-clearing permit Jan. 31 for Wawa to build a gas station and convenience store at 7142 Commonwealth Ave. in West Jacksonville.

The permit shows a project cost of $1.32 million for a 2.35-acre site at southwest  Commonwealth Avenue and Pickettville Road, west of Interstate 295.

Dykstra Construction LLC, part of JF Petroleum Group,  of Morrisville, North Carolina,  is the contractor. Wawa Florida LLC of Tampa is the owner.

Bohler Engineering FL LLC of Tampa is the civil engineer.

The city is reviewing building-permit applications for construction of the building, gas canopy, retail fuel system and dumpster enclosure at a cost of almost $1.56 million.

Pennsylvania-based Wawa has at least 23 stores open in Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties, with more locations in review or under construction, including in  North Jacksonville near the Amazon.com fulfillment center and Jacksonville International Airport.

Wawa opened its first three area stores – one in Clay County and two in Duval – at year-end 2017.

The company said then it envisioned Northeast Florida as a 30- to 40-store market.
