Fernandina Beach Publix closing April 26 followed by a demolition, rebuild

The new store could feature a Publix Pours, offering pizza, burritos, beer, wine and coffee.

The Publix Super Markets Inc. store in Fernandina Beach is scheduled to close April 26, followed by its demolition and reconstruction.

The store is in the Island Walk Shopping Center at 1421 Sadler Road near South 14th Street.

The city of Fernandina Beach permitted the project Jan. 7. The St. Johns River Water Management District issued an environmental resource permit in 2023.

A Publix spokesperson confirmed the 57,086-square-foot store will be replaced with a 58,834-square-foot version, matching a store that opened in Wellington, west of West Palm Beach, in November.

That location includes a Publix Pours, which offers pizza, burritos, beer, wine and coffee.

Bohler Engineering FL LLC, based in Boca Raton, is the civil engineer. Benning Construction Co. of Atlanta is the contractor.

Minor updates to the existing parking area are also planned. Plans show 722 spaces. 

The Island Walk Shopping Center sits on 19.89 acres at Sadler Road and South 14th Street in Fernandina Beach.

Other tenants in Island Walk include Coastal Pizza and Golf Pub Social. The shopping center was built in 1987.

Island Walk Station LLC, through Phillips Edison & Co. of Cincinnati, is the property owner.

The nearest Publix to Fernandina Beach following the closure will be Publix Super Market at Villages of Amelia at 463855 Florida 200 in Yulee, about 6 miles away.
