One of the Jacksonville Bar Association’s longest-running traditions begins again in early October when Aging True sends the “Santa letters” to its Meals on Wheels clients.
The annual program matches law firms and attorneys with older adults served by the nonprofit’s daily nutrition program, many of whom have no family to help them celebrate the holidays.
JBA members purchase gifts requested by the seniors and deliver them to their homes.
One of the founders of the initiative, retired city Ethics Officer Carla Miller, said the idea was born while she and other members of the JBA board of governors were planning the annual Bench & Bar holiday party in 1990.
“We were talking about the food and beverage budget and decided we should do something to make a happy holiday for people less fortunate. Toys for Tots was already helping children, so we decided to focus on seniors,” Miller said.
The board members sponsored gifts for 10 people the first year. The program has since grown to serve more than 300 people each year, said Aging True Executive Assistant Linda Stone.
Some recipients ask for simple items, like socks or cookies. Others have greater needs, like a winter coat or a small appliance.
“A lot of our seniors would not have anything for Christmas without the Jacksonville Bar Association’s holiday project. It really makes their day,” Stone said.
