Jacksonville-based Gate Petroleum Co. plans to raze its Gate gas station and convenience store in Ponte Vedra Beach and construct a larger facility with more pumps.
JEA is reviewing a service availability request submitted Nov. 20.
The store is at 619 Florida A1A N., about a quarter mile north of Al’s Pizza.
Site plans show a 6,636-square-foot building. There are 10 fueling stations with 20 pumps and 12 parking spaces.
The current Gate station, built in 1998, is 5,430 square feet with eight fueling stations. It sits on 1.48 acres.
Jacksonville-based Prosser Inc. is the civil engineer. Fisher Koppenhafer, PA, of Jacksonville, is the architect.
According to Prosserinc.com, older Gate service stations typically range from 3,500 and 5,500 square feet with six to 14 fuel gas pumps. In addition to more fueling stations, newer and larger stores typically offer Yobe frozen yogurt and the fast-casual cafe Fresh Kitchen.
According to Mygatestore.com, the first Gate opened in 1960. Four years later it established its corporate office at 9540 San Jose Blvd., where the company still operates. Expansion to other states started in the 1970s. In 1990 it expanded its Northeast Florida footprint by acquiring 27 7-Eleven stores. In 2015 the company launched its first Fresh Kitchen.
The site says there are about 200 Gate service stations, about half of which are company-operated. Gate stores are in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
