Anchor Glass Container Corp. said in a Nov. 18 Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing that it is permanently closing its Northwest Jacksonville plant at 2121 Huron St., putting 144 people out of work.
“Changing business needs require us to close this facility permanently and, therefore, we are providing you with this notice,” the Tampa-based company said in a letter sent to Mayor Donna Deegan and City Council President Randy White.
Anchor said the first workers will be laid off Jan. 17 with terminations continuing through April 30, 2025.
The Northwest Jacksonville plant will close within a 14-day period beginning Feb. 16.
“These job actions are permanent, although there may be opportunities to transfer to other Company locations,” the letter said.
According to city records, the factory sits on two parcels totaling 23.98 acres. There are multiple buildings totaling more than 597,000 square feet. It is near the CSX Jacksonville Service Center.
Anchor said in a 2023 news release the company employed about 1,700 people in six glass manufacturing facilities in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, and Oklahoma.
