Amazon.com is updating its Pecan Park Road distribution center site for its Amazon Flex program, which allows people to deliver packages for the internet retailer using their own vehicles.

It also appears to be a move toward same-day delivery.

The city issued a permit Nov. 14 for horizontal development at a cost of $80,000 at the Seattle-based internet retailer’s 12900 Pecan Park Road fulfillment center near Jacksonville International Airport.

Plans show wayfinding signs and directions for Amazon Flex drivers along with a canopy and ramp at the proposed “SSD” program door.

Amazon Flex SSD refers to the “Sub Same Day” business at Amazon Flex, which aims to deliver a larger selection of items to customers faster.

Amazon says customers choose same-day delivery on eligible items marked for delivery by specific times.

Flex.Amazon.com explains that Flex drivers download the app and look for convenient delivery opportunities.

“Open the Amazon Flex app to search for available delivery blocks in your area. With every offer, you’ll see your expected earnings and how long your block is likely to take you to complete. You can also mark yourself as available in the app to qualify for instant offers,” the site says.

On the day of the block, drivers head to the designated Amazon location to pick up packages. They use the Amazon Flex app to navigate directions and deliver the package.

“Once your deliveries are complete, there’s nothing else for you to do but get paid,” the site says.

Drivers can choose to be paid soon after the delivery or on a preferred weekday, “or anything in between.”

Hiring.amazon.com says most drivers earn $18-$25 per hour.

“It’s simple: you’re an independent contractor,” the site says.

To be eligible, drivers must be 21 or older, have a valid U.S. driver’s license and have a midsize or larger vehicle, among other requirements.

Hiring sites for Amazon Flex in Jacksonville say that Amazon Flex delivery drivers use vehicles, smartphones and GPS devices to pick up packages from one of Amazon’s hubs and deliver them to customers on the same day.
