Publix Super Markets Inc. has applied to the city for a permit to remodel another area store and cut the number of checkout lanes to add self-checkout stations.

Elkins Construction LLC of Jacksonville is the contractor for the proposed $900,000 remodeling at 731 Duval Station Road in Duval Station Centre in North Jacksonville.

It is at Duval Station and Starratt Roads near First Coast High School.

Plans show Publix will add or remodel freezers and coolers, among other work. It will cut the 10 checkout lanes to seven while adding a self-checkout corral.

Jacobs Architects of Orlando is the architect.

The 21-year-old store remains at 45,350 square feet. It anchors the almost 77,000-square-foot shopping center, which was built in 2003.

Lakeland-based Publix bought the center in 2015 for $15 million.

Publix Media Relations Manager Hannah Herring said March 20 that the company plans to start the remodeling project this summer for completion by year-end.

She said it will remain the same size and remain open during the work.

Publix regularly renovates or rebuilds its stores. It recently filed an application to remodel its East Arlington grocery at northeast Monument and McCormick roads.

Plans show it will add self-checkout stations and keep seven staffed checkouts as well as the customer-service center.

Other services and merchandise appear to be in the same location.

Publix wants to remodel the 54,244-square-foot interior of the supermarket at 2771 Monument Road, No. 19, the anchor of the Cobblestone Crossing shopping center. The work includes enclosing a loading dock.

Herring said that project also is anticipated to start over the summer for completion by year-end, remaining open during the work.

Publix, which rebuilt the store in 2014, applied to the city for a permit for an estimated $900,000 renovation to include new finishes, fixtures and repairs.

Elkins Construction LLC is the contractor and Jacobs Architects is the architect.

Publix has anchored the center since both were built in 1986.

In 2014, Publix demolished the original store and built a larger version that was about 9,000 square feet bigger and included a pharmacy, bakery, deli, floral and fresh seafood departments.

The supermarket chain has been developing, redeveloping and renovating stores across Northeast Florida.
