Gate Petroleum Co. will close its 25-year-old Monument Road gas station and convenience store in early April to remodel and expand it, while operating from a temporary “mini Gate” until the project is completed in several months.
The mobile trailer will sell drinks, snacks and tobacco, according to Vice President Misty Skipper.
The gas pumps will remain operational.
Skipper said Jacksonville-based Gate will renovate the store at 1001 Monument Road over several months “to update and expand the store offerings.”
She said the expansion will allow Gate to include a Fresh Kitchen, Gate’s in-store, fast-casual cafe.
“The renovation will enhance the store’s layout to increase product availability and add freshly prepared breakfast sandwiches, burritos, pizza, cookies and Sweet Freez soft serve ice cream,” she said.
The city issued a permit March 4 for National Retail Services Group Inc. of Tucson, Arizona, to remodel the 5,039-square-foot store and add 1,938 square feet.
Gate bought the 2.36-acre site in 1998 and built the store in 1999.
Fisher Koppenhafer of Jacksonville is the architect.
It’s not the first mobile station.
“We’ve used mini Gate several times before,” Skipper said.
