St. Johns County issued a building permit June 27 for a BJ’s Wholesale Club in the master-planned Beachwalk community.
It is the membership club’s first location in the county.
The 104,298-square-foot building is planned at a project cost of $9 million.
The club is at 87 Beachwalk Blvd. off Florida 210 about 2.5 miles east of Interstate 95 and north of a nearby Publix Super Market.
The county issued separate permits to develop an on-site gas station with 24 pumps at a cost of $946,000.
Plans to develop the store’s foundation were approved May 16 at a project cost of $4 million.
Twin Creeks SPE LLC of Boca Raton owns the land.
In 2019, project civil engineer Prosser Inc. made an inquiry to JEA about the availability of electric, water, sewer and reuse services to serve the BJ’s site.
The membership warehouse chain announced plans April 30 for the membership club location that is expected to open by year’s end.
It would be its 41st location in Florida, according to a news release.
In addition to a Florida expansion that includes a location in Brooksville, BJ’s announced plans for six new clubs across the Southeast and Midwest in early 2025.
According to its website, “BJ’s Wholesale Club is a leading warehouse club operator on the East Coast of the United States. We deliver significant value to our members, consistently offering 25% or more savings on a representative basket of manufacturer-branded groceries compared to traditional supermarket competitors.”
Annual memberships at BJ’s start at $20.
BJ’s Wholesale Club, founded in 1984, is headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts. It operates 244 clubs nationwide according to a release.
It has four locations in Northeast Florida: River City Marketplace in North Jacksonville; Atlantic Boulevard in East Arlington; Philips Highway near Baymeadows; and Blanding Boulevard in Orange Park.
It has a distribution center in West Jacksonville.
