Dominium, a developer and manager of affordable apartments, appears to be considering a project in Jacksonville.
The company, based in Sandy Springs, Georgia, in suburban Atlanta, submitted a service availability request to JEA on June 23 related to possible development of 270 units of affordable multifamily housing at 7373 Old Kings Road S. The site is 10.25 acres.
The address is the former site of the duPont Family YMCA Youth Development Center operated by First Coast YMCA. The center closed after the coronavirus pandemic.
In May, the St. Johns County Commission denied a proposal by Dominium to build about 300 affordable apartments at a site on County Road 16 near Silverleaf Parkway because of concerns about possible negative impact to traffic in the area.
Now Dominium is looking at possible sites in Duval County to build affordable apartments.
John Rodriguez, government relations associate for Dominium, said July 1 that the developer does not have the property under contract, but confirmed filing the service availability request.
“We are asking out of pure curiosity whether water and sewer are available there. We are actively looking for an opportunity to build affordable apartments in Jacksonville, so you’ll probably see more of those service availability requests from us,” Rodriguez said.
