Southeastern Grocers Inc. announced Jan. 25 it completed the sale of its Fresco y Más grocery stores, as part of its plan to sell its Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket chains to Aldi.
Aldi in August 2023 agreed to buy Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers and about 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Southeastern Grocers also agreed to sell 28 Fresco y Más stores separately to an investment group called Fresco Retail Group LLC.
While it completed the sale of the Hispanic grocery chain, Southeastern Grocers continues to operate the Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores until the sale to Aldi is completed.
“The successful sale of Fresco y Más marks an important milestone on our path forward,” Southeastern Grocers CEO Anthony Hucker said in a news release.
Southeastern Grocers expects the sale of the company to be completed in the first half of 2024.
Aldi, with U.S. headquarters near Chicago, has about 2,400 U.S. stores.
Aldi has said it will convert some of the Southeastern Grocers stores to Aldi when the deal is completed, but it has not announced details on specific stores.
The two privately owned companies have not announced terms of the deal.
