Jacksonville’s hometown supermarket brand Winn-Dixie is now part of the global Aldi grocery company, which is converting some of the stores into its discount format.
In March, Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers closed on a deal to sell about 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets to German supermarket operator Aldi, whose U.S. base is in Illinois.
Aldi said it would convert some of the stores and ended 2024 with at least four of the 13 Northeast Florida locations targeted for the change – the Harveys in Edgewood Square in Northwest Jacksonville, and three Winn-Dixie stores in the Fort Caroline and Brierwood areas of Jacksonville and Fleming Island in Clay County.
Southeastern Grocers’ 400 stores operate in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Aldi said about 50 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores would begin the conversion process in late 2024 and reopen as Aldi stores in 2025.
Aldi has about 2,400 U.S. stores and said the Southeastern Grocers acquisition is part of a plan to add 800 stores nationwide by 2028 through new openings and store conversions.
