A fourth Southern Grounds & Company will open in St. Augustine Jan. 2.

Coffee shop and restaurant owner Mark Janasik confirmed the plans Dec. 28.

The 2,820-square-foot space is at 124 King St., at King and Riberia streets in the historic district. Catholic Daughters Club previously occupied the space. It is about a quarter mile south of San Sebastian Winery.

Southern Grounds worked with Group 4 Design and Cronk Duch Architecture, both of Jacksonville, on the project. St. Augustine-based homebuilder Corner Construction Services Inc. is the contractor, according to Janasik.

“We used preservation architecture and interior designers to honor this 100-year old building, “ he said. “We believe the renovation of a historic property is often the starting point and anchor of a block.”

In addition to coffee-based drinks, Southern Grounds serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. It also serves beer and wine, and tea-based drinks. It offers goods from its Blueberry Artisan Bakery in Jacksonville.

“For us, we think of there is something special about founding a business that brings people together,” Janasik said. “Each Southern Grounds we build should ‘invite you in’.”

Southern Grounds has locations in Neptune Beach, San Marco and Avondale, and two at Jacksonville International Airport pre- and post-security. The original location, in Neptune Beach, opened in 2016.

An executive franchise at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville’s Integrated Oncology Building was permitted to build-out May 2023.

The $233 million integrated oncology building is expected to open in the third quarter of 2025, according to Mayo Clinic.

There’s more coming from Janasik and his partners.

Four years after announcing the project, Janasik-led Restaurant & Hospitality Investment Group is starting construction of a mixed-use restaurant and office concept at 400 Riverside Ave. in the Brooklyn area of Downtown Jacksonville.

The HUB Brooklyn is at Riverside Avenue and Forest Street.

Janasik and Joe Cronk and Cliff Duch of Cronk Duch Architecture & Planning are developing that project, which they expect to open in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The HUB will include Southern Grounds, Alder & Oak, which will feature wood-fired entrees, and The Sky Bar, which will serve craft cocktails and small plates.

Janasik also owns Mexican-concept restaurant Oaxaca Club in Jacksonville Beach at 31 First Ave. N.
