The University of North Florida is partnering with JEA and Jacksonville-based Miller Electric to launch a workforce training program for electricians in renewable energy.

In a Dec. 11 news release, UNF said the program was partially funded through a $445,000 grant from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

The two-year training program will be available to early-career electricians and high school students ages 16 to 25. Participants will earn a certificate from UNF.

“By combining classroom instruction with hands-on experience, this program provides apprentices with comprehensive training in renewable energy systems,” said James Fletcher, associate professor in the College of Computing, Engineering and Construction and director of the Clean and Renewable Energy Lab at UNF.

The program is set to launch in summer 2025, with three electricians from JEA and Miller Electric beginning their training during an eight-week course. The second year will include both working electricians and high school students selected from under-represented schools in Jacksonville.

“Partnerships like these are critical to developing a workforce prepared to meet JEA’s future energy needs,” said Vickie Cavey, JEA CEO and managing director, in the release.

“I look forward to seeing how this collaborative work and hands-on training program will help shape the future of sustainable energy solutions in Northeast Florida.”

As part of the initiative, students will gain practical experience by working on projects under guidance from experienced mentors from JEA and Miller Electric.

The program is named the Educational Microgrid for Enhancing Renewable Growth and Education.
