The Jacksonville Division of the U.S. District Court has a case in which the court seeks to appoint counsel to represent the plaintiff.

The plaintiff alleges a now former correctional officer at Regional Medical Center physically attacked him, causing physical and emotional injuries.

He also alleges that before the attack, he told two current correctional officers about threats the attacking officer made, but they failed to protect him.

The plaintiff filed suit against the former and current correctional officers for violating his constitutional rights and needs an attorney to assist him in discovery, filing of dispositive motions and any potential resolution through settlement or trial if necessary.

The case is Stoddard v. Heilig, et al., No. 3:23-cv-371-MMH-LLL. Contact Jacksonville Division Manager Jim Leanhart at 904-549-1983 or [email protected] to learn more.

This case offers an opportunity for counsel to gain federal court experience while providing a public service.

Pursuant to the court’s Civil Pro Bono Appointment Program, an appointed attorney is permitted to be reimbursed for certain costs incurred during the representation.

Information regarding allowable costs and the procedure for obtaining reimbursement is available at flmd.uscourts.gov.
