The Bread and Board is planning to reopen Downtown

Failure of the original concrete floor installation is causing delays, says the co-owner of the West Bay Street restaurant.

The Bread & Board and Provisions in Downtown Jacksonville says it plans to reopen after it can resolve issues with its flooring.

The restaurant at 100 W. Bay St. in the VyStar Credit Union campus closed May 26 “for maintenance and repairs throughout summer.”

The ownership said the delay in reopening is because of a lack of progress in resolving the flooring issues.

“The Bread & Board repairs relate to a failure in the original concrete flooring install. If you followed our construction, we poured a new slab on the ground floor over all of our systems (electrical, plumbing, etc.),” co-owner Dwayne Beliakoff said in an email Aug. 23.

Beliakoff noted that over the past three years, the finish rapidly declined or “decayed,” leaving exposed concrete that was never properly cured.

“This caused medium to large holes as much as 4 to 5 inches deep in the flooring surfaces and exposed conduit throughout the main floor, creating trip-and-fall issues for guests and staff,” he said.

“We hoped to complete the repairs by the end of July to mid-August. Although testing and inspections have occurred, we have not yet sourced a suitable replacement material that would not succumb to the same issue. We are trying to avoid greater issues in the future.”

Beliakoff said a possible interim plan might include “simple patchwork,” lunch take-out service and self-ordering kiosks to reduce labor costs.

He said he expects to know more about those options by Aug. 30.

The Bread & Board said it is using its kitchen for catering and taking orders.

“So if anyone needs Southern Fried Chicken, they can still get it!” Beliakoff said.
