CSX Corp. announced an agreement June 28 to acquire short line railroad operations in Alabama, which will establish additional freight corridors connecting the Southeast, Texas and Mexico.
In a series of transactions, Jacksonville-based CSX and Calgary, Alberta-based Canadian Pacific Kansas City will acquire or operate portions of Meridian & Bigbee Railroad, which is owned by short-line railroad company Genesee & Wyoming Inc.
CSX CEO Joe Hinrichs said in a news release the deal provides shippers “access to markets in Texas and Mexico as well as into the heart of the thriving and dynamic U.S. Southeast.”
Meridian & Bigbee operates between Median, Mississippi, and Montgomery, Alabama.
Canadian Pacific will operate the segment between Meridian and Myrtlewood, Alabama, and CSX will operate the lines east of Myrtlewood.
CSX and Canadian Pacific will establish an interchange at Myrtlewood.
Terms of the transactions were not disclosed.
