Home goods retailer Bed Bath & Beyond Inc., which is liquidating, will be replaced with clothing and decor store Burlington in the Argyle Village shopping center in Southwest Jacksonville.

The Bed Bath & Beyond store closing was announced in April, along with one in River City Marketplace in North Jacksonville, before liquidation sales began at its remaining stores in April.

The city is reviewing a permit application for Burlington in 25,887 square feet of space that has been leased by Bed Bath and Beyond at 6001 Argyle Forest Blvd.,  No. 24.

No contractor is shown for the estimated $500,000 project.

SBLM Architects PC in Miami is the architect.

Burlington said by email June 23 that its Argyle Village location was coming this fall and would share more information as that time draws closer.

Bed Bath & Beyond has been liquidating its stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

There are three Bed Bath & Beyond stores in Northeast Florida in Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach and St. Augustine. The company also operates a buybuy Baby in Jacksonville that is liquidating.

The Bed Bath & Beyond stores that closed in River City Marketplace and Argyle Village were part of the company’s 87 stores nationwide it announced Jan. 30 it would close.

Bed Bath & Beyond announced April 23 that its 360 Bed Bath & Beyond and 120 buybuy BABY stores and websites would liquidate.

The Union, New Jersey, company said it filed voluntary petitions for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey.

The company said in early January it was considering bankruptcy after worse-than-expected sales.

Meanwhile, New Jersey-based Burlington has been adding stores.

National discount retailer Burlington confirmed in a statement April 27 that it would open a store in Gateway Town Center in the Brentwood area.

“Our team is always looking for great locations to house a new Burlington. We look forward to opening this new location in Fall 2023, making this our 6th store in the area,” it said.

“In addition to great bargains, the store will also bring approximately 65-75 new jobs to the community.”

The city is reviewing plans to renovate 24,066 square feet of space for Burlington in Gateway Town Center at an estimated cost of $750,000.

Landlord Gator Investments, through Gateway Retail Center LLC, also wants to renovate the exterior of the Burlington space at an estimated $200,000.

Burlington, based in Burlington, New Jersey, sells clothing and accessories for men, women, children and babies and also sells home goods and, reflecting its former name, coats. It was long known as Burlington Coat Factory.

Burlington has five area stores in Regency Plaza, Old St Augustine Plaza, Westland Park Plaza, River City Marketplace and Saint Johns.

The Westland Park Plaza store at 6000 Lake Gray Blvd. is a mile from the Argyle Village location.

Burlington did not say if the Westland Park store would be affected by the Argyle location.
