Jacksonville-based Baptist Health intends to expand its St. Johns Town Center area emergency facility.

The city is reviewing a permit application for Meyer Najem Construction to add 3,509 square feet to the free-standing center at an estimated cost of $2.6 million.

The addition will expand the 17,030-square-foot center to 20,539 square feet at 4085 Town Center Parkway. It opened April 12, 2016.

Jacksonville-based RS&H is the architect and engineer.

The center is off of Interstate 295 near the University of North Florida.

Plans show seven more exam rooms for a total of 23. The center offers adult and pediatric emergency care.

Spokesperson Wesley Roberts said Jan. 4 that Baptist Health is expanding the Baptist and Wolfson Town Center Emergency Room to provide additional treatment rooms.

The expansion is set to be complete in 2024.

In March 2015, Southern Baptist Hospital of Florida Inc. bought 1.76 acres from Gate Petroleum Co. to develop a free-standing pediatric and adult emergency center.

Baptist Health plans said then it will operate 24/7 and feature 16 private-treatment rooms and an on-site lab and imaging services.

Southern Baptist Hospital paid $2.145 million for the property.

Perry-McCall Construction built the emergency center at a project cost of $8.5 million.

It houses two emergency centers under one roof and is staffed around the clock by board-certified emergency medicine physicians.

There are eight adult emergency beds and eight Wolfson Children’s Hospital children’s emergency beds.

Baptist Health said the Children’s Emergency Center is staffed with a Wolfson team trained to handle the emergency needs of children.

Baptist said both emergency centers are supported by a full-service laboratory, CT scanner and ultrasound imaging services on-site.
