SuperTarget at OakLeaf Town Center is preparing for what it calls the 2024 remodel, described by Target Corp. in November as the next evolution of its new store strategy

Target said its new larger-format stores at nearly 150,000 square feet are 20,000 square feet larger than the chain average and have new design elements.

“Target also will bring its reimagined store design — which features a more open layout and localized elements to inspire and serve its guests — to future remodels as well as new stores across its chain,” it said.

Target said it also would continue to open stores of all sizes but focus on the larger footprint in the next few years.

Target says its larger-format store includes an updated backroom fulfillment space that's five times larger than previous stores of similar size to boost its same-day services.

The city is reviewing a permit application for a $6.24 million remodel of the 180,561-square-foot SuperTarget at 9525 Crosshill Blvd. in OakLeaf Town Center in Southwest Jacksonville.

Target owns the store, which it built in 2007.

The project is an interior and exterior remodel of the existing store with a space reconfiguration, updated finishes and fixtures and mechanical, electrical and plumbing updates.

Minneapolis-based Target announced Nov. 10 that its larger footprint design features more modern elements “that will inspire guests, advance Target’s sustainability goals and reflect each store’s local community.”

John Mulligan, Target executive vice president and chief operating officer, said the design and larger stores better support “Target’s wide assortment of merchandise offerings, support the retailer’s popular same-day fulfillment services and deliver on its stores-as-hubs strategy for digital fulfillment.”

Target's new design includes large windows and a more open layout to allow for more natural light.

The larger stores will feature a larger backroom fulfillment space. Target said the stores fulfill more than 95% of the retailer’s digital orders and same-day services, accounting for more than 10% of sales.

Target said the new design includes increased light and natural elements with larger windows and a more open layout; localized design features that range from native landscaping outside the store to localized products within the store; built-in sustainability that includes EV charging ports for customers; and team spaces with flexible rooms and more furniture options.

“Starting in 2023, more than half of Target’s approximately 200 full store remodels and almost all the retailer’s approximately 30 new stores will include elements of the new design,” Target said.

Expanded natural elements are part of Target's new design.

“Beginning in 2024, all of Target’s remodels and new stores will feature the majority of the reimagined store design elements.”

Target Corp. has nearly 2,000 stores.

It said in November it had a new store with the design in Katy, Texas, and that more than half of the expected 200 full-store remodels in 2023 and almost all of the almost 30 new stores would feature elements of the new design.

“And beginning in 2024, all our remodels and new stores will feature the majority of these reimagined store design elements,” it said.

The Target design will include team spaces with flexible rooms and more furniture options.

ConsumerAffairs.com, a Nevada-based news service, reported that with the remodel, Target will grow stores’ fulfillment spaces up to five times as big as they’ve been.

“In expanding these backroom areas, Target says stores will be better equipped to handle same-day orders and online orders,” it reported.

In November, Target requested permits for $5.2 million in renovations to 45,541 square feet of the 180,561-square-foot store. That permit was voided.

The Target stores will feature modern elements “that will inspire guests, advance Target’s sustainability goals and reflect each store’s local community.”
