U-Haul intends to add a U-Box facility in Jacksonville
U-Haul Co. of Florida applied to the city for a permit to build a 14,159-square-foot stand-alone storage structure in LaVilla at an estimated $1 million on 1.1 acres it bought in 2020.
The city issued a mobility fee calculation certificate March 25 for the U-Haul U-Box warehouse on 0.6 acres at 141 Myrtle Ave. N. It calculated a mobility fee of $5,840 to mitigate the traffic impact.
The owner is U-Haul Co. of Florida.
A U-Haul spokesperson said June 6 the company declined comment because it is in the preliminary stages of the project.
Uhaul.com says U-Box containers can be used to store belongings until a customer is ready to move.
“We can ship them across town or across the world and store them for you until you are ready. You can even use them as extra storage on your property,” it says.
U-Haul already has an operation at the site.
U-Haul announced Sept. 16, 2020, it would open a facility after buying 1.1 acres at 141 N. Myrtle Ave. and 1285 Houston St.
U-Haul Co. of Florida paid $1.3 million Aug. 25, 2020.
Records show it bought three parcels with two brick buildings built more than 100 years ago, totaling 36,719 conditioned square feet. The largest 0.6-acre parcel south of Houston Street is vacant.
The property is bordered by North Myrtle Avenue, Cleveland and Forsyth streets and to the north by light industrial use.
U-Haul said the property was once home to the Western Union Telegraph Co., which it said built the nation’s first transcontinental telegraph line.
“Our goal is to maintain as much of the original character as we can during the renovation process. We are honored to clean up the property and preserve this piece of Jacksonville history,” said Amanda Bauer, president of U-Haul Co. of Jacksonville, in the 2020 news release.
