Orlando-based ABC Liquors Inc. is building one of its new Tux Car Wash concepts in Jacksonville along Baymeadows Road, where it is demolishing a closed retail store.

The city issued a permit Jan. 14 for construction of  the 4,455-square-foot car wash on 1.52 acres at 8771 Baymeadows Road at a cost of $1.34 million.

R.D. Michaels Inc. of Winter Park is the contractor. OA Architecture of Miami is the architect.

The city issued a permit Dec. 15 for the contractor to perform site demolition and site work at $550,000.

It also is reviewing a permit for Realco Recycling Co. Inc. of Jacksonville to demolish the 7,582-square-foot ABC Fine Wine & Spirits store.

That application specifies the name as the Tux No. 701 Car Wash. The building permit describes it as an automatic car wash and vacuuming stalls.

The city determined in October 2020 that no mobility fee needs to be calculated for the project on 1.52 acres. The Jacksonville Planning Commission approved a zoning exception.

The existing store was built in 1976 for Jax Liquors. ABC bought Jax Liquors in 1990.

The Orlando Sentinel reported June 23, 2021, that the liquor-store chain is evaluating locations for car washes.

It reported that Chief Marketing Officer Sean Kelly said the business name is Tux Car Wash, but that ABC was finalizing details.

“This is another way for us to diversify our business,” Kelly told the newspaper.

“At ABC, we are always seeking new opportunities and ways to cater to our communities.”

He said family-owned ABC has 123 stores in Florida and continues to open two to four stores a year.
