Jacksonville-based Hurd Construction Management announced it has been retained as the program development firm and construction manager for Juan Valdez as it expands into Florida.

The Colombian company intends to open 182 stores in major Florida markets by 2025, Hurd said. It will build new cafés in a multiyear project with construction investments exceeding $50 million.

Hurd said it will develop a strategic construction program for “rapid geographic expansion throughout the Sunshine State.”

“I can remember the Juan Valdez logo flashing across television and magazine ads as a child. Now, as the brand is set to expand in Florida, we are eager to be its local construction partner,” said Hurd President Brandon Hurd.

“Coffee lovers in Florida can look forward to enjoying soon a delicious cup of Juan Valdez’s famed Colombian coffee at a location near them.”

Hurd’s team will start with several locations in South and Central Florida.

According to the Juan Valdez cafe website, it has stores in Windermere and Doral.

Hurd said the program is in the overall early planning and development phase and that Jacksonville locations are being identified.

The National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia established the Juan Valdez coffeehouses to promote fair trade coffee, the release said.

The first stores opened in Colombia and expanded in several Latin American markets, Spain, Washington, D.C., Miami and the Middle East, while growing quickly in more countries, it said.
