The Bicentennial Edition of the Great Fire Run is May 7 at Old St. Andrews Church at 317 A. Philip Randolph Blvd., near the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville and VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.

Registration is open at runsignup.com for the 5K that begins at 7:30 a.m. and a 1-mile run that begins at 8:30 a.m.

Advance registration by May 6 is $39 for the 5K, $24 for the 1-mile route.

The 5K follows a route from the former church to Beaver and Davis streets, along the boundary of the May 3, 1901 fire that destroyed most of Downtown.

The disaster began when a spark from a kitchen fire ignited Spanish moss drying at a nearby mattress factory. Within hours, almost every structure in the city was burned to the ground, The fire stopped at Hogans Creek, sparing Old. St. Luke’s Hospital, now the historical society’s offices.

In addition to title sponsor Firehouse Subs, law firms supporting the event include the Bedell Firm; Marks Gray; Milam, Howard, Nicandri & Gillam; and Pajcic & Pajcic.

Other sponsors include Champion Brands, the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair, Manifest Distilling, Means Engineering Inc. and Wells & Drew Companies.

Proceeds from the runs benefit the Jacksonville Historical Society.
