Jacksonville International Airport is gaining a new airline and a new nonstop destination.
Sun Country Airlines announced Oct. 19 it will begin service from Jacksonville International Airport to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport starting April 8.
The flight will operate twice weekly on Fridays and Mondays.
According to the Sun Country website, on April 8 the flight leaves Minneapolis at 8:35 a.m. and arrives in Jacksonville at 12:22 p.m. It departs Jacksonville at 1:25 p.m. and arrives in Minneapolis at 3:22 p.m.
The airline said introductory fares will be as low as $69 one-way.
Sun Country, headquartered in a suburb of Minneapolis, says it focuses on leisure and charter travel and offers cargo services.
“We know there is pent-up demand for convenient, affordable travel, and we’re here to help folks enjoy the vacations they’ve been dreaming about,” Sun Country Airlines Chief Revenue Officer Grant Whitney said in a news release.
Jacksonville Aviation Authority CEO Mark VanLoh said in the release that Sun Country is the ninth airline serving JIA.
“Their low fares will increase tourism to Northeast Florida, while offering our community nonstop flights to the Twin Cities,” he said.
In addition to Jacksonville, the airline announced it is adding service from Minneapolis to Buffalo, New York; Pittsburgh; Spokane, Washington; Burlington, Vermont; and Charleston, South Carolina.
Sun Country Airlines says after the expansion it will operate more than 100 routes and 80 airports in the United States, Mexico, Central America, Canada, and the Caribbean.
Sun Country will offer service to 10 airports in Florida, comprising Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota, St. Petersburg, West Palm Beach, Punta Gorda, Fort Myers, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Jacksonville.
