The city issued a permit June 16 for Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers to build-out a new Winn-Dixie liquor store format in Miramar Center, between the Lakewood and historic San Marco neighborhoods.

Williams & Rowe Co. Inc. is the contractor for the $180,000 interior renovation of 8,640 square feet at 4472 Hendricks Ave. The site is at the southern end of the building anchored by Players Grille.

The store is larger than traditional Winn-Dixie Wine & Spirits stores. By comparison, a liquor store being added at 11380 Beach Blvd. is 2,665 square feet.

Joe Caldwell, Southeastern Grocers director of corporate communications and government relations, said June 17 he will share more details as the opening date approaches and details are finalized.

"The liquor store will open later this year in plenty of time for customers to stock up on their holiday party essentials," he said.

Jacksonville-based Sleiman Enterprises owns the property through Miramar Equities Inc.

The Jacksonville Planning Commission unanimously approved a zoning exception March 18 for the project.

Liquor store companies have been introducing new formats in recent years.

Orlando-based ABC Fine Wine & Spirits is developing new and redeveloping older stores into prototypes, some in the 12,000- to 13,000-square-foot range. The design has a central guest services counter with wine taps, a growler filling station, a register and the ability to sample spirits.
