Target Corp. is preparing to remodel the SuperTarget at southeast Beach and Hodges boulevards with what a spokesperson calls the company’s “most ambitious store redesign to date.”

The city is reviewing a permit application for Target to remodel the store at 13740 Beach Blvd. at an estimated cost of almost $4.3 million.

The spokesperson for the Minneapolis-based discount retail company said the company has increased its investment to “enhance the guest experience with the next generation of store design”

It will feature “modernized design elements” to bring “more technology and digital experiences to our stores to make shopping in store and online safer, easier and more inspiring for our guests.

Target calls the location is Jacksonville East store. The company did not have renderings.

"This remodel is part of our ongoing investment in our stores," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said there were no additional details to share because renovations have not started.

“There are many considerations and factors that influence a remodel project’s timing, scope and specific details during the planning process,” the spokesperson said.

The permit application says the project includes exterior work, the sales floor, restrooms, fitting rooms, guest services, offices, gocery area, stock room, Starbucks area and cafe.

Property records show that Target Corp. owns the 173,585-square-foot store, built in 2007. The SuperTarget anchors the Pablo Creek Plaza East shopping center. Plans say the store is 130,311 square feet, which might reflect the interior space it occupies.

The Chainstorage.com industry site reported March 25 that Target Corp. was putting a temporary hold on some of its remodeling and growth initiatives during the coronavirus pandemic.

The site said Target planned to remodel about 130 locations in 2020, down from about 300. All other remodels were moved into 2021.

Target has been remodeling some area stores over the past several years but the pandemic likely led to adjustments in future designs. The eight Target stores in Duval County were built from 1991 to 2007.

In March 2017, Target unveiled design elements for what it called then “the company’s most ambitious store re-design to date.”

It said it would invest “billions of dollars over the next three years to reimagine hundreds of existing stores.”

Target said in 2017 it planned to renovate more than 1,000 stores by 2020.

Those renovation elements included elevated merchandise presentations to feature its product assortment; a second entrance for the grocery area with self-checkout lanes and a dedicated order pickup counter; dedicated parking spaces where Target can bring out online orders; an enhanced grocery department design featuring woodgrain fixtures and grab-and-go options; more circular center aisles; and technology that allows Target employees to search inventory, take payment from a mobile point-of-sale system and arrange delivery, all from the sales floor.
