The city issued a permit April 26 for Amazon.com to install a material handling system in its 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center under construction in North Jacksonville at a cost of $41 million.

Vanderlande Industries Inc. of Marietta, Georgia, is the contractor for the project at 10501 Cold Storage Road in Imeson Park.

The city also is reviewing a permit application for installation of a free-standing rack pick module at a project cost of almost $14 million.

The systems total a construction cost of almost $55 million.

In September, the Seattle-based online retailer announced it will open the 500-job Jacksonville fulfillment center in fall 2021 to pick, pack and ship small items, including apparel, accessories and footwear.
