The first of three livable shipping container deliveries arrived Downtown on Sept. 18 at JWB Real Estate Capital’s Ashley Street Container Lofts project.
JWB President Alex Sifakis said Sept. 21 that project contractor ShayCore Enterprises Inc. delivered containers to the site with a partial build-out complete.
“There will be three ‘drops’ total,” Sifakis said in an email.
“We are doing it staggered, not like we had originally planned where all the containers are coming to (the) site at once.”
The $1.7 million project comprises 18 retrofitted shipping containers in the Cathedral District. Sifakis said the goal was to finish the build-out off-site and deliver the shipping containers to the 412 E. Ashley St. property.
Space issues at ShayCore’s facility prompted JWB and the contractor to complete construction on-site after each delivery.
Fisher Koppenhafer Architecture Interior Design is the architect.
Construction for each 320-square-foot container apartment will cost about $90,000, Sifakis told the Daily Record in August. Rent will be $700-$800 a month and JWB plans to start leasing in November.
Each unit will have full appliances, including a washer-dryer; granite counters; and high-end light and plumbing fixtures.
Sifakis said Sept. 21 that the next delivery will be in three to four weeks, and the project will be completed in the first quarter of 2021.
Plans call for the west exterior wall of the apartments to feature a mural. There will be a courtyard-patio area between the containers and bike racks.
Sifakis said for accessibility compliance, the first-floor units have bathrooms at the end of the unit, so there are no balconies on those.
