A former Kmart at 1501 Normandy Village Parkway in West Jacksonville will become U-Haul Moving & Storage.
The city issued a permit Dec. 8 for Scherer Construction of North Florida LLC to convert 75,522 square feet of space at the former discount store into what will become a self-storage center and truck rental showroom at a cost of $481,539.
It appears to be the first phase. Plans specify that the almost 95,000-square-foot building will comprise warehouse, self-storage, other storage and mercantile space.
They show Phase 1 at 72,342 square feet and Phase 2 at 18,428 square feet. Some remaining space is not in the contract. Those square footages can change.
Sears Holdings Corp. closed the store, which was the last Kmart store in Jacksonville, in mid-April 2017.
U-Haul Florida LLC bought the 8.7-acre property in December 2018 for $3.7 million. The building was developed in 1993.
