Jacksonville city parks and Duval County beaches to reopen 5 p.m. April 17

Mayor Lenny Curry said use is restricted to essential activities and social distancing is required.

Mayor Lenny Curry announced April 16 that Duval County beaches and parks will reopen at 5 p.m. April 17, with restrictions for essential activities only. 

A news release says essential activities as defined in Gov. Ron DeSantis’s executive order are participating in recreational activities consistent with social distancing guidelines, such as walking, biking, hiking, fishing, running, swimming, taking care of pets and surfing.

“This can be the beginning of the pathway back to normal life,” Curry said in the release. “Please respect and follow these limitations. Stay within the guidelines for your safety as well as for the safety of your neighbors.”

The release said the beaches will open from 6-11 a.m. and 5-8 p.m. They will remain closed during all other time periods. 

“Please be advised that you are swimming and surfing at your own risk,” the release said.

The city said April 17 that sunbathing, towels, blankets, chairs, coolers, grills are not permitted.

In Jacksonville Beach, public parking is available west of First Street. Public parking lots and end zones will be closed east of First Street.

Jacksonville city-owned parks will resume normal hours starting at 5 p.m. April 17, but Curry’s executive order limits gatherings to fewer than 50 people.

Also:

• City of Jacksonville golf courses will reopen during normal operating hours, but individuals must follow social distancing requirements 

• No overnight camping at Hanna or Huguenot parks is permitted

• Playground amenity usage must follow social distancing requirements

• No organized group activities are permitted, including picnics or gatherings, team sports or any type of group activity 

• All park restroom facilities will remain closed 

• Pavilions and picnic areas will remain closed
