The Duval County Property Appraiser's Office opened for business as usual Thursday morning.

Property Appraiser Jerry Holland said the office having been closed, like all city offices, in anticipation of Hurricane Dorian does not extend the deadline for Duval County property owners who wish to contest their 2019 ad valorem tax assessment to the Value Adjustment Board – it remains 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Holland also said that if a property owner sustained damage caused by the hurricane that likely would reduce the value of the property, such as loss or damage to a structure or dock, the potential reduced value won't affect the current tax bill, because the assessments were based on value as of Jan. 1, 2019.

However, “If you sustained damage and it's not repaired by Jan.1, 2020, notify our office. That could affect next year's assessment,” Holland said.
