Two Retro Fitness locations franchised by former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard are closed and no longer listed on the retrofitness.com website.
Paper signs taped on the doors of Retro Fitness at 13475 Atlantic Blvd. in Harbour Village and at 9802-05 Baymeadows Road in Baymeadows Village addressed to “Dear valued members” says the locations closed “as a consequence of unsustainable and continuing financial losses.”
The letters on the doors say additional communications and information will be provided “in the forthcoming days” from Michael Moecker & Associates Inc. as the assignee of DMG One LLC, which is led by Garrard.
Fort Lauderdale-based Michael Moecker provides options to companies with financial problems, including insolvency, liquidation and disposition of assets.
A Jacksonville Moecker representative and Garrard did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Retro Fitness leased 12,790 square feet in Baymeadows Village, according to the property brochure. It rented 11,614 square feet in Harbour Village, according to a site plan.
By early afternoon Wednesday, LA Fitness slid “take one” passes behind the paper sign in Baymeadows.
The signs direct members to visit a website regarding their rights under Florida's Health Studio Act at freshfromflorida.com/Consumer-Resources/ConsumerRights-and-Responsibilities/Health-Studios.
DMG One operates the Harbour Village location and DMG Two LLC has the Baymeadows gym. Both LLCs were registered with the state by Garrard in March 2014.
Retro Fitness announced in October 2013 that Garrard and his wife, Mary, would open three gyms.
Build-out costs for the two locations they opened totaled $1.7 million, city records show. Certificates of completion were issued in 2015 — January for the Harbour Village location and June in Baymeadows in June 2015.
Action News reported the franchises closed Saturday “with no warning for members or employees.”
A third area Retro Fitness in Fleming Island is open and owned by a separate franchisee.
