After being closed for six years, the 107,000-square-foot closed Kmart store along Blanding Boulevard is targeted for redevelopment.
Miami-based Blanding Self Storage LLC purchased two parcels Feb. 25, containing the former Kmart and the adjacent northern parcel, for $4.4 million.
The land totals 9.88 acres. The Kmart was built 50 years ago.
The northern parcel at 4645 Blanding Blvd. was sold by Buffalo Land Co. LLC. The Kmart parcel at 4567 Blanding Blvd. was sold by Equity Trust Co.
American National Bank issued a $3.3 million mortgage to Blanding Self Storage LLC.
Listing broker Prime Realty Inc. described potential property uses as a car dealership, warehouse, self-storage, big box retailer or redevelopment opportunity. It was listed for $4.79 million.
The property is relisted by Austin Kay with NAI Hallmark. He previously was with Prime Realty.
Kay said the current owner is open to various arrangements for the property and might develop it as self-storage.
Blanding Self Storage manager Robert Lansburgh also owns Jacksonville Storage through Jacksonville Self Storage II LLC. He paid $2.25 million in 2013 for the existing storage facility at 10724 Lem Turner Road.
Lansburgh also owns facilities in Pembroke Pines and in Houston. He did not return a phone call for comment.
Sears Holdings closed the Blanding Boulevard Kmart store in January 2013 and laid off 83 employees. At the time, Sears spokesman Chris Brathwaite said the company “made a business decision to close this store based on its performance.”
It's not the only Kmart that closed.
Another closed Kmart site at northwest Beach and University boulevards closed seven years ago and is proposed for commercial redevelopment.
Kmart closed a store in 2015 at 9600 San Jose Blvd. Atlantic Mini Storage of America Inc. bought it. It has not been redeveloped.
Kmart closed the Neptune Beach store in 2016. That property is proposed for a mixed-use development of apartments and retail.
The last Kmart in Jacksonville closed in 2017 on the Westside at 1501 Normandy Village Parkway, which has been rezoned for a U-Haul truck, trailer and auto rental business with outside storage.
