On Feb. 14, The Jacksonville Bar Association’s Professionalism & Mentoring Committee, led by Duval County Judge Gary Flower, hosted a mentor and mentee breakfast. It was an informal setting for experienced attorneys and judges to share insights regarding practice development and professionalism and guide mentees to career resources.
Meaningful discussion took place on the topic of work ethic and what that looks like as the practice of law is constantly evolving.
“I think having a mentor is a key component to building a successful career, and finding a mentor early on is one of the best things a new lawyer can do. Not only has my mentor become an important networking contact who can help me develop relationships across the Jacksonville legal community, but his years of experience make him well positioned to help me navigate all of the unique challenges young lawyers face. These challenges include things related to career advancement, ethical issues, work/life balance and complex legal matters.”
— Justin Kempf of his mentor, O. David Barksdale, of Bedell, Dittmar, DeVault, Pillans & Coxe.
“As a new attorney and solo practitioner, things can get overwhelming, frustrating and lonely at times. The breakfast was very encouraging and I gained a lot of insight and practical information from everyone in attendance. I love the collegiality and professionalism provided by the Jacksonville legal community.”
— Lintera Harven, breakfast attendee.
