St. Vincent’s HealthCare is changing its name to Ascension St. Vincent’s as it works through the transition to a unified ministry name.

Jacksonville-based St. Vincent’s has been part of the Ascension system since 1999.

Ascension says it is the largest nonprofit health system in the U.S. and the world’s largest Catholic health system with 2,500 sites of care and 36,000 providers in 22 states and District of Columbia.

Ascension was formed by the Daughters of Charity, who founded St. Vincent’s, and the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Nick Ragone, Ascension chief marketing and communications officer, said in a statement that creating consistent names across Ascension nationwide makes it easier for patients.

St. Vincent’s joins Ascension systems in six other states to begin the move to a unified name. Those in Michigan and Wisconsin changed in September.

In Northeast Florida, Ascension St. Vincent’s operates three hospitals and dozens of health care facilities and employs more than 5,000 people.

resident and CEO Tom VanOsdol said in the release that being part of Ascension enables St. Vincent’s to tap knowledge and resources of the nationwide medical professionals.

“This is the next step in our integration as a national ministry in developing a better-connected system of care for our patients, physicians and caregivers,” he said.

Ascension’s system comprises 141 hospitals and more than 30 senior living facilities.

VanOsdol said that during Hurricane Irma, Ascension colleagues in Birmingham, Alabama, offered platelets needed for surgery and Pensacola associates delivered them the day after the storm.
