J.C. Penney Co. Inc. landed a permit for its going-out-of-business sale at 3000 Dunn Ave. to start June 2 and end July 31.

The permit issued by the Duval County Tax Collector allows a 60-day sale.

J.C. Penney initially wanted to close and liquidate 138 stores by mid-June but delayed that because of better-than-expected sales after the closings were announced March 17.

Area stores to be closed include the Dunn Avenue store in the Jacksonville Regional Shopping Center in Northwest Jacksonville and one in the Palatka Mall.

The company said previously about 75 employees work at the Dunn Avenue store and about 40 are at the Palatka location.

A spokesman has said the company will relocate some leaders and if possible, help employees identify other jobs in nearby J.C. Penney stores.

Eligible associates who do not stay with the company will receive separation benefits, including an on-site career training class.

J.C. Penney said about 5,000 positions nationwide will be affected by the closures.

It continues to operate four Jacksonville area department stores in Regency Square Mall, The Avenues mall, Orange Park Mall and the Ponce de Leon Mall in St. Augustine.

An attachment to the permit included an original sales ad when the closing was to start May 22.

It shows that prices would be cut 30 to 50 percent off of the original price.

“Everything must go! Nothing held back!” it said. The store fixtures and equipment also are for sale.

It also said that J.C. Penney coupons cannot be used for closing store purchases.
