City notes: Ander Crenshaw joins Jacksonville University Public Policy Institute board

The Jacksonville University Public Policy Institute is adding former U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw to its board of advisers.

The Republican congressman spent 16 years representing the 4th District, where defense issues were among his priorities.

He was instrumental in making Naval Station Mayport the East Coast homeport for all littoral combat ships and Naval Air Station Jacksonville the East Coast home for all P-8 aircraft, according to a news release.

Rick Mullaney, director of the institute, said Crenshaw’s “extraordinary public policy experience, depth and expertise will be an invaluable contribution.”

Before serving in Congress, Crenshaw was an investment banker and a Florida lawmaker, serving in both the House and the Senate.

Finalists for Duval County teacher of the year selected

Five teachers from Duval County Public Schools were selected as finalists for the 2017 Florida Blue Teacher of the Year award.

The winner will be named Feb. 24 during the annual EDDY Awards.

The finalists are:

• Allison Bear, J. Allen Axson Montessori School

• Michael Bostic-Jones, Raines High School

• Latrece Brown, Andrew Robison Elementary School

• Holly Hultgren, Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology

• Caitlyn Stetson, Reynolds Lane Elementary School

The finalists were surprised with a visit to their classrooms from a prize patrol, featuring Superintendent Nikolai Vitti and Trey Csar, president of the Jacksonville Public Education Fund. The EDDY Awards are an initiative of the fund.

New $15M Jacksonville Humane Society building rogressing, several board changes announced

The Jacksonville Humane Society is making several leadership and board changes as it prepares for the opening of the adoption and education center this summer.

Lisa Everly will lead the transition team as board president this year. Joey Kelly is president-elect, Kristine Cherek is vice president and Alexis Kane will remain as secretary.

Dina Vickers will serve as treasurer this year, to be followed by Franklin Danley.

New board members are Scott MacKenzie, president of the Scott R. MacKenzie Foundation, and Randy Goodwin, president and owner of PRI Productions.

Linda Stein will continue as capital campaign chair through the end of the year and former board president Michael Munz will serve as board chair.

Progress continues to be made on the $15 million center, which will open this year — the 10th anniversary of the fire that destroyed the old facility and killed 86 animals.

Jacksonville airport launches app

Jacksonville International Airport has launched a “Jax Airport” app to help travelers with their experience at the facility.

The app includes flight information, a list of shops and restaurants at the airport and an interactive map of the ticketing, baggage claim and gate areas, according to a news release.

It also provides information about in-terminal amenities, the latest airport news and job listings.

“With so many people using mobile devices, an airport-specific app seemed to fill a need,” said Jacksonville Aviation Authority CEO Steve Grossman.

It is available for both Apple and Android devices.

Snowberger brought on to lead Buzz Media through expansion

Joe Snowberger has joined Buzz Media Group to serve as its president as the company expands its services.

The company, which publishes Buzz Magazine and iwantabuzz.com, has added video production and Buzz TV to its offerings, according to a news release.

Buzz TV is a weekly interview spotlighting new local businesses, community leaders, health professionals, attorneys and other topics. Each week will feature more than 20 guests, the release said.

Snowberger brings a mix of public and private sector experience to the role. He previously served as director of operations for Downtown Vision Inc., program manager and executive producer at PRC Digital Media and community consultant and economic liaison for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

He will remain CEO of the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association, which is trying to bring the USS Adams back to Jacksonville and establish a naval warship museum.

CBRE promotes Gulliford to senior managing director of North Florida

William “Tripp” Gulliford has been promoted to senior managing director, North Florida, at CBRE Inc.

He will oversee operations in the company’s offices in Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa, according to a news release. Gulliford has been in charge of the Jacksonville and Northwest Florida markets since joining CBRE in 2013.

“Tripp has done an excellent job of expanding CBRE’s operations in North Florida and brings more than two decades of commercial real estate, banking and management experience to his new role,” said John Ferguson, president of the Southeast division.

Gulliford previously worked for EverBank Commercial Advisors, Midland Development Group and Regency Centers, the release said.

A member of The Florida Bar, he also practiced general business and commercial real estate law with Rogers Towers and Ulmer, Murchison, Ashby & Taylor.

Curry selects longtime pastor Newbill for JEA board appointment

The Rev. Fred Newbill was appointed by Mayor Lenny Curry to serve on JEA’s board of directors.

Newbill is pastor of First Timothy Baptist Church and president of F&P Investments of Jacksonville.

He replaces Warren Jones, who resigned after being elected to the Duval County School Board.

Curry said Newbill’s passion for Jacksonville and dedication to service “demonstrate a strong commitment to the advancement of our city.”

Newbill received a bachelor’s degree from Stetson University, a master’s from Luther Rice Seminary and a doctorate of divinity degree from St. Thomas Christian College.

The Jacksonville native also served in the U.S. Navy.
