With the Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop, the Florida Coastal School of Law Foundation will host Jacksonville’s first Race Judicata, a 5K run and 1-mile fun run at 9 a.m. Jan. 21 at Atlantic Beach.

Race Judicata-Jacksonville was the brainchild of faculty members working in the law school’s experiential learning program who were eager to raise awareness in the community about the need for civil legal aid and the work of the school’s clinical and pro bono programs.

There are 11 programs that provide free legal services to the community, including seal and expunge, family law, asylum, citizenship and trusts and estates.

The money raised from Race Judicata will be used for Coastal Law clinical and pro bono programs.

The school also sponsors pro bono events and clinics in collaboration with our partners from Jacksonville Area Legal Aid and Three Rivers Legal Services, who will be at the race to provide information about  needs in the community and their work.

One of the mission pillars at Coastal Law is to serve the underserved. In an effort to further this mission, since the fall 2015 entering class, all students are required to perform volunteer service.

One of the reasons for the requirement is to help educate law students about the importance of giving back to those in need while they develop their legal skills.

Since 2007, Coastal Law students have donated more than one million hours of legal services to the community.

This run is a great way for the legal community to come together to recognize the importance of helping those in need.

It also provides an opportunity for runners to get out and stretch after the holidays. It may also be a great fit for those who made health-focused New Year’s resolutions.

Whether you are a serious runner, a walker or a beachcomber, this will be a terrific event for all. Sign up as a team or on your own.

A virtual option is available for those who are not in the area but would like to contribute.

There is a $25 early bird registration fee available until Friday and after that, the entry fee is $30.

To register, go to https://racejudicata.itsyourrace.com/register/.

Thank you to the Harrell and Harrell law firm, Kara Roberts, Reyes Legal and The Law Office of Karen Winston for their sponsorship of the race.

Attorneys interested in pro bono opportunities in the 4th Judicial Circuit are encouraged to contact [email protected].
