City notes: New Naval Air Station Jacksonville commissary opening Thursday

The new commissary at Naval Air Station Jacksonville will open Thursday, after an 8 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony.

The commissary’s sales floor is 64,000 square feet, which is 18,000 square feet larger than the old one, according to a news release.

New features include an expanded seafood station, larger bakery and a natural and organic foods section.

The old store will be demolished to create more parking for Navy Exchange and commissary customers.

Symphony chorus auditions are Saturday at JU

The Jacksonville Symphony Chorus is having auditions Saturday at Jacksonville University’s Marks Chapel.

Auditions are by appointment, but walk-in time slots will be available beginning at 10:30 a.m., according to a news release.

They will consist of a 90-second sight-reading activity, establishment of range and singing an excerpt of “How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place” by Johannes Brahms.

The chorus generally has rehearsals each Tuesday from 7:30-10 p.m. at Marks Chapel. All performance-week rehearsals are at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts.

Chorus members are asked to commit to a full season.

The volunteer chorus has been accompanying performances by the symphony for more than three decades.

St. Johns River ferry back online today

The St. Johns River ferry is back in operation today, after a month-long project on the slip walls and landings.

The ferry operates 6 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7 a.m.-8:45 p.m. weekends. It departs every 30 minutes. The vessel is operated by the Jacksonville Transportation Authority.

Lynch selected for pension fund board

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department Lt. Michael Lynch has been appointed to represent the department on the Police and Fire Pension Fund board.

He will fill the unexpired term of Lt. David McCall, who spent 10 years on the board, but retired in December. He joined the fire department in 1996.

Lynch was the only candidate to apply for the spot on the board. He has been with the fire department since 2005. He will serve out the remainder of McCall’s term, which ends Oct. 1.

According to a news release, Lynch also serves as a southern district representative on the executive board of Local 122.

Airport lot closing for several months

Economy Lot 2 at Jacksonville International Airport will be closed for several months for the installation of a new parking system.

Customers can use Economy Lot 1, which has ample parking spaces available, according to a news release. The free shuttle service between the lot and the terminal will operate as usual.

Economy Lot 2 is the first of the airport’s five public parking facilities to undergo the overhaul. The improvements include replacing gates and equipment, adding the ability to integrate with SunPass and offering easy payments in the terminal or upon exit.

In addition, the release said, a license plate recognition system will confirm actual parking times in case a ticket is lost.

JTA trolleys available for marathon

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s Beaches trolley will be available 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Feb. 12 for the 26.2 with Donna marathon.

Race watchers can buy a $4 unlimited ride, single-day pass at Walgreens or through the MyJTA mobile app. Otherwise, trips are $1.50 each way.

Three trolleys will operate every 20 minutes on Third Street, between South Beach Regional Shopping Center and Atlantic Boulevard, according to a news release.

Advanced Disposal now servicing Jacksonville Beach

Advanced Disposal is the new waste and recycling service provider for Jacksonville Beach, beginning Monday.

Garbage and recycling will be collected on the current schedule, with items needing to be at the curb by 7 a.m.

Recycling will be collected in newly provided 65-gallon wheeled carts, according to a news release. The 18-gallon bins will no longer be collected beginning Monday.

Residents were notified through the mail that bulk collection schedules were changing.
