E. Hunter Harrison, president and CEO of Jacksonville-based CSX Corp., died Saturday at the age of 73.

Harrison's health had been a concern since he was brought in to CSX in March to implement Precision Scheduled Railroading.

His obituary, published Thursday in the Palm Beach Post, didn’t reveal the cause of the executive’s death.

Harrison was known to have respiratory issues. CSX said he died “due to unexpectedly severe complications from a recent illness.”

Harrison’s obituary said he was “widely viewed as the best railroader in history.”

It called Harrison “a tough but fair leader who had a great eye for talent” and loved mentoring people.

“To the public, he was seen as a corporate giant, but those who knew him best will miss the Southern gentleman with a heart of gold and a generous, unstoppable spirit,” the obituary said.
