The past year has been a tremendous one for The Jacksonville Bar Association. The organization and its members have received statewide recognition for its initiatives.

On the local level, the association has offered numerous opportunities to engage in networking and enjoy continuing legal education seminars to enhance the professional and social lives of its members.

Over the next two months, there are plenty of opportunities to stay connected with your fellow lawyers.

Free legal history seminar

On April 12, 4th Judicial Circuit Judge Karen Cole has organized a free seminar “The Florida Legal History You Never Knew: African-American, Hispanic and Women Lawyers.”

In addition to Cole, the all-star cast of presenters will include:

• 11th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Susan Black

• Matthew Corrigan, chair of the Political Science Department at the University of North Florida

• Attorney Adrienne Conrad of the Jackson Lewis firm

• Attorney Audrey Moran, senior vice president for social responsibility and community advocacy at Baptist Health and 2016 chair of JAX Chamber

• U.S. District Judge Virginia Covington

• U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard

• Duval County Judge Roberto Arias

• U.S. District Senior Judge Henry Lee Adams

The topics for this outstanding event include the importance of diversity in our profession, implicit bias and habit as it relates to diversity, the struggle for acceptance, overt and subtle prejudice against women lawyers, the path of Hispanic lawyers in Florida and other topics geared toward eliminating bias in our profession.

Pre-registration is required. Email Kristy Bend at [email protected] for registration form.

Help a Dream Come True child

On April 20, the Young Lawyers Section of The Jacksonville Bar Association will host Rendezvous on the Rooftop from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Intuition Ale Works.

Proceeds from last year’s event helped send 6-year-old Nancy on her Disney Dream.

This year’s edition will help another Dreams Come True child experience Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Epcot, Universal, Islands of Adventure and Sea World.

The child and his or her family will be a special guest at Give Kids The World, a magical village that host Dream children and their families.

Please thank Megan Moon at Gunster for her work in organizing this event.

Golf at San Jose Country Club

The association is hosting its annual golf outing on April 24 at San Jose Country Club.

Attendees will enjoy showcase golf on a course designed in 1925 by the renowned architect Donald Ross.

The deadline for registration is April 20 at jaxbar.org.

As always, there will be plenty of prizes and opportunities to socialize with the membership.

We appreciate the efforts of Tad Griffin at Pajcic & Pajcic in making this event a huge success each year.

Professionalism Conference at The Players Championship

The second annual Professionalism Conference at The Players Championship is May 10. This year, Ashley Greene of the Bedell Firm is chairing the professionalism seminar.

This event will offer 4 CLE credits, including ethics, appellate practice, and technology certification, pending approval by The Florida Bar.

The conference includes admission to the practice round of The Players Championship, unlimited access to the Championship Club overlooking the 16th fairway, free lunch and an open bar.

Law Day Luncheon

Mark your calendar for the annual Law Day Luncheon on May 16 at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront to hear keynote speaker U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Susan Black.

The theme is “The 14th Amendment: Transforming American Democracy” to highlight how the 14th Amendment has played a critical part in important civil rights legislation and how it is a foundation for those who seek to promote equality.

We look forward to seeing you at these events.
